Happy Memorial Day!

Filed Under: Labels:
This is definitely a Memorial Day that will be difficult to forget. (Not that I want to forget it) It's just so freaking random how your day can start one way and end up as something that you never expected.

For instance, I thought that I would just spend my Sunday of Memorial Day weekend just swimming with my fiance and her cousins out at her grandparent's cottage by Lake Milton, but at the end of the day, I was pulling a stray dog out of freeway traffic at 2am and driving her to an emergency dog clinic.

Wow.

Even without that last event, I still had an action-packed day with friends and family.

It started with a giant table of food at my fiance's grandparents' cottage in Lake Milton. You know the drill. Embarrasing stories, kids running after golf carts, and girls screaming in the water

Later, we were just sitting around, discussing our problems, and trying out new alcoholic concotions.

After that all passed, I was driving my fiance and myself back to my hometown where we waited for a friend to have a small fire for close friends. It was great to catch up.

We had some of the classic discussions of "Remember in high school..." and "What ever happened to So and So..." Plus I got to check out this awesome dock made out of tree limbs that reminded me of something from Hook. (Never Never Land and the lost boys)

When that little shindig ended, it was time to book my fiance back to her house... but not without coming across a timid Boston Terrier that was briskly walking along the median of Route 680, putting herself in the dangerous path of passing cars.

Now, I've never picked up a stray animal before, but this was dangerous and we were both worried of what the results could be of just driving on by, so I felt that we had no choice.

We picked up the poor pooch, contacted an emergency clinic that was open 24 hours and put her in some good hands until she was found earlier today by her real owners. It was really a load-off to find out that she wasn't just dumped.

That definitely occurred to me and those kinds of thoughts anger me to my limit.

I had to crash on my fiance's couch at that point since it was about 5am and couldn't imagine myself driving any more.

I'm happy to say that she's back home and happy now and that I probably gained some karma points. All in all, it was a great Memorial Day celebration, and I hope that your celebration was/still is just as awesome!

Happy Memorial Day!

Your friend,
Kyle

Song Meaning - Way With Words

Filed Under: Labels:
It can be really funny how some songs get "over-analyzed" by fans because they desperately want a stronger meaning and depth involved in their lives. The Beatles and their fans is probably a good example of that.

My dad is actually a huge Beatles fan and owns a large collection of books that talks about this subject in great detail. (Not to mention that he was once Paul McCartney in a Beatles tribute band)

But in these volumes, they brush on the same idea. Everyone was so overwhelmed with the talent, diversity, and sudden fame of the Beatles that everyone just assumed the band's tunes must have contained powerful, deep, and almost messiah-like meanings.

You know what those books say?

The Beatles have said things similar to "Sometimes we just picked things that rhymed well."

That cracks me.

I just thought that I would share my interest with that special piece of history. It doesn't really have to do with my lyrics since they HAVE meaning behind them in this instance, but it's funny to think about.

So let's talk about Way With Words. You can check out the lyrics here:

Way With Words Lyrics

I like to use personification sometimes with my lyrics and this is one of those times.

Yea, personification. Look who was awake during high school English.

When I'm saying the line "She's got a way with words, but I'll never follow", the "she" is what's being personified.

OK, so you're probably asking "What the heck is the 'SHE' then?"

"She" can be anything that you are reluctant to conform to. At least that's what I meant it to be.

The real meaning behind this tune is "Whatever you do in life, stand out." Be a person, be an individual, and be proud of who you are.

And no, this isn't an Oprah special.

I just feel that a lot of people that fraternize with are generally unhappy with their place in the world mainly because they fear standing out and being recognized as an individual.

But you know, sometimes, you just gotta step out of your comfort zone, be yourself, and follow your beliefs.

I would hate to die thinking that I never expressed myself honest to my beliefs and personality. Wouldn't you?

When I have the gang vocals singing, "You can't fight me on your own!", I meant this as a representation of how strong you can truly be when you have a passion that identifies you as an individual. It empowers you like adrenaline and makes you feel almost invincible.

And the words, "I know I just keep on breaking these bottles, but I'm still craving the burn when I swallow", are metaphorical about how the thing you're trying to separate from usually is a struggle to beat.

I thought imagery of alcoholism would set off some emotions here.

I find myself thinking too often about the things in my life that have a "way with words" and are trying to get me to follow blindly.

Making Melodies That Stick - It's a Frickin' Science

Filed Under: Labels:
Did you know that Elton John usually writes all the lyrics to his songs first before anything else? All those pretty piano lines and catchy licks that create the bulk, all that's just an afterthought to him.

(In a manner of speaking)

OK, so that's being a little extreme, but geez, he must be confident that he has some intense emotional connection with his lyrics to create that stuff.

If you're not an Elton John fan, try listening to the song Tiny Dancer or watch the Lion King. Maybe it'll become your cup of tea.

But I mean, It's so freakin' weird how people come up with songs and and I'm not exempt from that strange aspect either.

Honestly, the place that I come up with the meat of my tunes is in the shower. I'm running that shampoo through my hair and running my vocal chords the whole time too. I find the germs are much more willing to relocate in this fashion.

I know that one of the melody lines for a previous band I was a part of, Let All Prevail, was thought up while I was conditioning. I think the song was "Boom".

On a side note, if anyone is interested in purchasing a past LAP album, I got boxes of our album, More Than it's Worth, and you can basically name your price. Hit me up on my contact page for more information.

But I started singing a melody, I remember it when I stepped out and dried off, so I immediately plugged in my guitar and started putting the chords together.

You see, for me, I have a different definition of what a "song" is compared to other "song writers" that I know. My definition of a song is a set of transitioning chord progressions with a vocal melody over top. Without the vocal melody, you can't call it a song. You can call it a tune just to be fair.

That also leads me to my next point of what the most important part of the song is and I'm gonna say 8 times out of 10, it's the vocal melody. Yea, if it's metal, hardcore, hip-hop, or rap, the monotonous timbre of the voice draws most of the attention to the instruments' composition, but for every other genre (besides instrumental) that involves singing melodies, it's the vocals that count.

For example, there is a chord progression that just about every band has used at one point or another. I call it "The Emo Progression" and it's made up of four chords. Now, the chords will change depending on the key of piece, but the path of the progression is always the same.

One example is: B, G, D, A

The guitar tab for this in standard tuning is:

e-|-------------|
b-|-------------|
g-|-4-----7-----|
D-|-4--5--7--7--|
A-|-2--5--5--7--|
E-|----3-----5--|

Examples of where this progression has been used:

Ending of Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional
Chorus of Going Away To College by Blink-182
Chorus of both Buried a Lied and Rum is For Drinking, Not for Burning by Senses Fail
Chorus of The Great Escape by Boys Like Girls

I used to have a whole list of songs with this progression but I must have lost it or thrown it away, but you get the picture.

Other progressions that I've labeled include "The Pop Rock Progression", "The Screamo Progression", and "The Melodic-Metal Progression". I won't list those at the moment since I don't want to ruin every song that you've ever listened to.

But how does this knowledge tie into my song-writing?

1. I come up with a vocal melody with pseudo words.
2. I place fitting chords behind the melody while trying my best to AVOID the progressions I've labeled. Therein lies my originality.
3. Refine the transitions and lead licks.

It's as easy as 1-2-3!

And if I don't have a strong enough vocal melody for a tune, that song doesn't get put into circulation. It's as simple as that.

For any other song-writers out there, I'd love to hear your methods to creating a tune. Let's have a discussion :]

They Don't Make Bands Like They Used To

Filed Under: Labels:
Reading Time: 7 min

A couple weeks ago, I was cleaning out this cupboard full of old VHS tapes and I came across something that I never thought I would see again. It was the recording of my very first show in my very first band ever!

Like whoa. I was 15 when I was in my very first band called The 534 Band and we thought that we were awesome. That band consisted of Dustin Underwood on bass guitar, Adam Dempsey on drums, Jimmy Cahalin on lead guitar, and me on rhythm guitar and vocals. We were a classic rock cover band.

It still makes me laugh to this day, but I whipped out this video and started reminiscing on how cool we thought that we were.

For instance, I forgot that we had covered both Stay Together for the Kids by Blink 182 and Mary Jane's Last Dance by Tom Petty all in the same set. Definition of cool right there.

But it was where I started and I thought that it was pretty awesome and that caused me to start pulling up memories of later bands that I was a part of and the local scene that I felt was fantastic for the time.

It was in the days when every year there was a Battle of the Bands at St. Luke's Church in Boardman called the MV Ulster Peace Project. (I know it's still there, just not a battle anymore)

There were shows every weekend at Lion's clubs and Veterans halls. Freaking sweet. And for some reason, I always thought that the biggest and best bands in the area played at the Champion Rollarena. haha

But I just wanted to share with you, this list of some of the local bands that I felt were a huge part of the local music scene and where it is today.

Made in Canada - Myspace

It appeared that everybody knew who Made in Canada was in their prime and if you went to a show where they were playing, people were right up front and in their face. I can remember at one of the last shows where I was a part of Let All Prevail, we played at a high school with Made in Canada and got yelled at when we lifted Scott up to crowd surf during MIC's set.

Ah. Good times.

Those boys had at least one full-length album to their name called Turn Your Head and Cough which I am the proud owner of. I can remember being pretty jealous that they had a trailer and everything cause they went on short tours.

Ten Count Fall - Myspace

Ten Count Fall was definitely a big name around the area. If you got to share the stage with them, you were considered a big deal. I gotta give them respect cause they were the sort of band that you thought might make it.

I had a very short (very short) conversation with the vocalist/bassist and he basically said that he didn't have a job and that he was gonna just be in a band. Sounds awesome to me.

Red Sun - Myspace

This band was more of a mystery to me because I had only seen them play once. However, there name was common amongst most of my friends who often went to local shows like me.

Frankly, I couldn't describe what their sound was because it was all over the place. haha They were original definitely stood out in the group of local bands. Again, I thought they were really something.

Another Found Self - Myspace

I can't count how many times I would hear about Another Found Self winning some sort of band battle or headlining with some sort of huge act. Honestly, you could open the local paper and see their pictures in there just about every week!

When I got to play shows with them, they really knew how to get the crowd going with huge introduction grabbers, syncronized moves on stage, and just tons of interaction with the audience. Most of the other bands just stood their with stone faces of jealousy. haha

WiddlesWorth - Myspace

This is another group that I only saw once and it was totally worth it. Out at the Section 8 Skatepark I might add! Hey-o!

But, these guys put on a great stage show and I can understand why there vocalist moved on to eventually be a part of Inhale Exhale. (Signed to Solid State Records) It appeared that during their sets, he was much more into the heavier tunes and would just go nuts like standing on the kick drum and starting the mosh pits and stuff.

Rounding Third - Myspace

Here's another band that I saw out at the Section 8 Skatepark in Hubbard, OH. Geez, that place was a gold mine! But when I first saw them, they had four members with the infamous Silent Ron. haha

I can remember being very impressed by what I heard and those guys were tight together. Even after the departure of Silent Ron, I tried to follow R3's progress through new songs and music videos and such. They were another heavy hitter around the area.

La Verite - Myspace

This band has been around for what seems to be forever. They may not have had the same name, but those guys were so talented that they could switch instruments write a whole other set of tunes to captivate their audience.

With being one of the very few pure instrumental bands in the area, they really stood out. If that wasn't enough, they're a bunch of the nicest and courteous guys I've had the pleasure of doing business with.

Phoenix

Now, there was a band called Phoenix. They played around Warren every so often, and that's just about all I can remember about them. haha

I just know that they had a sort of grungy-classic rock thing going on, but they had a good following for it. I think there were chain wallets and steel-toed boots involved. I could be wrong.

Aldous - Myspace

Aldous was a band that I saw quite a lot of and saw even more through my past band experience with Wake the Lion! They're a bunch of solid bros even though I understand that they may not be together any more. They're still awesome guys.

The first time I saw them perform was at the Stomping Grounds in Austintown, OH where they were surrounded by a huge crowd of kids. Shane, the lead vocalist, had his shirt off as usual, and things were pretty damn crazy. I believe that my past band mate Mike suggested that we ask them to play with us. That was good idea.

Upnext

Just about everyone that I know has been in contact with the famous Duma brothers that started this Christian pop punk band. I actually auditioned with them... but it didn't go so well.
They were some really great guys and I've kept in touch with most of them. I can still remember them jamming out at Section 8 Skatepark. What a magical place.

Via Transit - Myspace

Matt from Aldous used to be in this post hardcore band and it was this group that performed at one of Let All Prevail's very first shows at the Newton Falls community center about 4 or 5 years ago! Whoa!
They were the first band that I actually heard were going on real tours and things. I was very impressed back then. Then the lead guitarist moved away to do tattooing or something.

Sanity Fare - Myspace

The first time that I saw Sanity Fare was at the Champion Rollarena with my friend Erika and the crowd was huge. It was really neat because they didn't play music like everyone else. They covered quite a few genres like folk, pop, rock, and other things.
The lead vocalist, Jeff, is now the CEO of FTF Records out of Stowe, OH. Talk about big dreams. I really admire the heck out of that guy.

Riputapirjelli

Two of the guys that were in this band, I played with in the first band I was ever in, the 534 band. (Named after a road near where I live) Riputa was just a 3-piece playing classic-rock style jam tunes that could mesmerize you.
The bassist and guitarist, Dustin and Tino, now have a new group called In a Circle that's some really gnarly folk.

Burning for Beauty

This may have been one of the bands that truly opened up my eyes to playing before I even knew what was happening.
I can just remember them playing (At Section 8 once again) and there was a pit on just about every song. And the guys in the band were just nuts. They were like melodic-hardcore or something sweet.

The thing that stands out in my memory the most is when they played their final song and the vocalist yelled "Somebody hit me!!"

It was super intense since the crowd was right up in front of them. I was blown away.

Well, that's as much as my memory serves me, but I think it's sufficient. If you have any awesome memories of any of these bands or some I may have not mentioned, please leave a comment and discuss!

All the best,
Kyle

New Song Uploaded (Exclusive Instrumental)

Here's a little something to tide you over until I get this tune completely finished. It's called Realizing the Betrayer and I'm really happy with how it turned out so far.

Sometimes I like to create songs with a very simple item and then repeat the catchiest part until it engulfs your mind and you can't get rid of it and that's exactly what I did with this piece. I love writing music like this where it can come across as powerful with very simple elements pushed to the limit.

You can listen to the tune on my player to the right if you're on the e-mail list. If you're not on the list, you can sign-up underneath the About Me video, or right underneath this sentence :]

I'm Engaged Plus My Birthday!

Filed Under: Labels:
So, I'm sitting here in my pajamas, typing up a blog post about the day I had yesterday because... DAMN, it was a long and awesome day. I'll tell you what. Oh, and about the title...

I'M ENGAGED!!

Say what?! Yes, it's true and I'm so glad that she said yes. (What a sucker) My dad had to explain to me all about keeping my cool and not chucking the ring into the woods in a violent rage if things didn't work out. Luckily, the ring is on her finger as opposed to the dirty forest floor.

So, I've been dating this girl named Danielle for the last two years and she's super awesome. I couldn't find someone better than her. Trust me, I've looked.

Every time that I took a hooker back to my home, they kept trying to push me away with talk like "Married? You messed up.", "I'm still getting paid right?" and "Come on, I'm a hooker."

(That's a picture of Danielle and I on her 21st birthday. She is not sober.)

It was also my birthday yesterday so I got that typical bombardment of Facebook comments from people that you don't speak to all year. It was great. I try to respond back to every single message... and I had the engagement responses on top of that.

And for some reason I thought that it would be the most fun to respond to everything from my HTC Hero. Oh yea. I'll be getting my thumbs reattached very soon.

But Danielle and I decided to go out to this very  large city park called Millcreek where there are lots of awesome things to loiter around. We were most impressed by the graffiti. And it wasn't really artsy graffiti either just really offensive and suitable to the occasion.

And on the way back to the car, I got down on my knee, asked her the most important question in my life, and she said yes. Whew.
After that, we went back to her house for some pizza, went to Dairy Queen for ice cream, and then saw Iron Man 2. Definition of awesome right there. Not to mention all of the text messages and phone calls I was responding to. (Including one phone call where I was threatened on my life if I were to hurt Danielle)

I love being engaged.

Now you're probably thinking to yourself, "Kyle, this is way too awesome! I don't think that I can handle any more awesomeness in this story or my legs might fall off!" Well, you better call your surgeon, 'cause I'm kickin' things up a notch.

Get this. My birthday presents were all three original Terminator movies and Arnold Schwarzenegger's first action movie, The Running Man.
PLUS...

Life in Your Way
She got me a t-shirt of my favorite post hardcore band that is no longer in existence anymore, Life in Your Way, and the return address from the shirt came directly from the house of Josh and Jeremy Kellam! Members of the band! Whoa!

In conclusion, I had a pretty good day yesterday, and I almost can't believe what happened to be honest. Now, I'm gonna use the hell out of the word "fiance." And if I don't feel like using that word cause it sounds weird, I'm going to mispronounce it and say "finance."

It just goes to show, there's someone for everyone. Make it happen people.

All the best,

Secret and Whisper's Teenage Fantasy Review

Filed Under: Labels:
3 out of 5

Secret and Whisper hooked me in as a fan about 3 years ago and it all began when I heard their demo version of the song Vanishings which was later released on their debut album, Great White Whale. (Debut under the new name of Secret and Whisper) Their power, guitar hooks, and hilarious YouTube videos were all the convincing I needed to patiently wait for the release of their record.

So, going into this review regarding their newest post hardcore release, Teenage Fantasy, I've admitted that I'm a current fan, but I truly attempted to analyze this album as an impartial listener with a set of clean ears to the group. However, my familiarity with their previous release and its awesomeness allows me to give some helpful input to other current SAW fans.

First Impression

Secret and Whisper's first track hits hard and gets your attention from the very beginning. If they weren't signed to a label and I owned a production company, I would be mailing them some contracts.

The drums shine through spectacularly with intricate rhythms all at a commanding pace that really sets the tone for the album, but melody hooks from the Secret and Whisper vocalist, Charles Furney, were not as abundant as before. The release isn't breaking new ground, but it'll still singe the shelves with the other post-hardcore releases.

Whistle Test

Unfortunately, this did not pass the whistle test for me and I'm just as disappointed as you are. (If you're a loyal Secret and Whisper fan) I found myself walking around hours after listening to the album for the first time without a single melody flowing through my lips. (Let alone involuntarily)

Multiple Listens

After listening to Teenage Fantasy at least twice, the songs began to make much more sense and I was gaining a better appreciation of the album. Secret and Whisper's tunes don't have as obvious of melodies as I had hoped, but they began to grow on me the second time around.

Current Fans

For those that are already fans of Secret and Whisper, you can sleep soundly knowing that the boys have cut another powerhouse record that'll occupy your music player for awhile. Just don't let too much wax accumulate on your ear buds from all that listening.

Bottom Line

Secret and Whisper have done it again, but may have lost that "first-album magic". After a few listens I was definitely without hesitation to say that I like the record and it delivers a typical post-hardcore sound that frequent listeners will appreciate right alongside their copies of Saosin and Emery.

Here's a video from their last album, Great White Whale. The song is called XOXOXO.

As I Lay Dying's "The Powerless Rise" Streaming Today

Filed Under: Labels:
I've been a huge As I Lay Dying fan for the last four years and I was super excited to see that they put up their entire album on their Myspace today for us die-hards to listen to! It's called The Powerless Rise and just like their last releases, it's brutal as shit, and they may have gone a bit thrashier than their previous album, An Ocean Between Us.

This album has also been co-produced by Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage. I hear that he's pretty chummy with the band overall. Sweetness.

I encourage any metal fans to go to their Myspace and definitely check out their tunes while they're still up there so you can bask in their metal excellence just as I have.

I think that my true obsession with them began when I saw their music video for Confined. It's so simple, but awesome all at once. Here it is just for those that haven't watched...

New Blog Layout Finished and HonestKyle Logo

I've been working diligently each weekend on this blog layout and my new logo instead of laying down any new tracks. Those have primarily taken place during the week.

However, I'm finally finished with my layout and it sets a new vibe of allowing any new visitors to partake in a more personal experience when they come to my site. Hence the embarrassing video introduction.

I made my own logo just so I could prove to myself that my minor in Graphic Design in college was not completely worthless, but only partially worthless.

I really want everyone to have a good experience when they come to HonestKyle.com and that's why I make these changes.

Plus, you'll notice that I have "Reviews" link up at the top in the navigation and I'll be reviewing albums (both local and major), music products, and just about anything else that I want, so check back to hear my obnoxious opinion on things.

Song 3 On Its Way, New Blog Template, And HonestKyle.com!

Filed Under:
If you've been following my ReverbNation, Twitter, or Facebook updates, then you'll have noticed that I've finished writing my third song and I've already began the recording process!

For those that are not a fan on ReverbNation, are not following me on Twitter, or are not "liking me" on Facebook, join my ranks! There are only three hazing ceremonies that involve genitalia now instead of five!

But for real, I've announced what the title of the newest tune is as well and it's called...

Realizing the Betrayer

Dark, edgy, and a lot of bad-ass syllables. That's how I do.

This song follows the title as far as the subject matter is concerned and I'm really excited about its release since I consider this, one of the catchiest post hardcore full-band pieces that I've written in a long time.

Now mentioning my blog and the domain...

I've really been putting a lot of time and effort into customizing my blog template and I'll be finishing it off soon once I get the logo up in its place.

Plus, with all this new social media arising out of the blue with Flitter, Bobspace, and MagazineHead, I figured that I need to have an official headquarters where my friends and fans can always come to hear the latest news.

Granted, that's what this page is, but I decided to raise the bar and purchase a domain name:

www.HonestKyle.com

That sure does look good. I never noticed how slightly symmetrical it is. It's just... beautiful... (soft whimpers).

But that's the bulk of it right now. I've just been so busy looking for my car that I recently purchased, that writing and recording have been on the backburner. For the last 4 weeks I had around 2-3 days to devote to music.

It made my ears sad.

Now, I'm responsibility free (for awhile at least) and I'm hittin' the mixin' board again!

For all those on my e-mail list, I'll personally let you know when the new tune releases :]
