I want to make this post short and to the point here. And my point is that I'm very appreciative of you for joining my e-mail list and enjoying my rock cover of "Airplanes" by B.O.B., Hayley Williams, and Eminem.

(I have to keep putting who actually wrote it in each post so I can steer clear of copyright problems)

But it's really made me excited for the next batch of songs that I'm going to be creating!

And for anyone new to join my ranks, please follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and any of the other social networks that I frequent by clicking the large icons in the sidebar >>>>

I try to give updates on all the other bands that I like like Blink 182, As I lay Dying, Four Year Strong, Our Last Night, etc., so I can still keep you entertained :]

For those that don't know what my goals are, here's my checklist in order of what I hope WILL achieve with this music:

  1. Write 8 - 10 songs for a large E.P. or short full-length album.
  2. Record those songs. (This is the current process)
  3. Gain supporters along the way. (Doing this as well I suppose)
  4. Design and press real merchandise. (T-shirts, mugs, designer purses, etc.)
  5. Audition musicians for the LIVE HonestKyle band.
  6. Press the album. (Get it printed)
  7. Have an Album Release show.
  8. If all goes well... more shows?...
A few of my friends that are also musicians have been asking me about the "live band" portion and when that's going down. Keep your pants on guys and pay attention to the agenda list!

I should mention that since there's the possibility of this "band" progressing further than just the album release show, musicians who want to audition, when the time comes, shouldn't consider HonestKyle to be some sort of "on the side" deal.

I want to go all out. Make it huge. Crush it. Strangle it. Bury it. Harass its mother. Call it up late at night and hang up. Tell it that I've actually changed, get it to go out with me again, and then dump its ass all over again for the hell of it.

So don't wander in thinking that you won't need to put forth much effort. Unlike most bands you've played in, I AM A STICKLER!

(Somehow, putting the word "stickler" in all caps just doesn't give off that bad-ass vibe I was hoping for. Feel free to insert other words and phrases like "TOUGH NUGGET", "TORNADO WRAPPED IN A TSUNAMI", and "RENEGADE HAMSTER MACHINE".)

If you're a musician that's willing to practice 'til it's perfect, promote like a felon, sing ON KEY EVERY TIME YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO, and know how to separate business and fun, then I'm gonna want to talk to you.

Oh yes, I'll talk to you.

But I'm really excited about the merch and all that other good stuff. I think that I'll have some original ideas besides just the normal CDs and tshirts so heads up for that.

But please tell a friend about the new "Airplanes" cover cause I would really like everyone to have free copy :]

Until next time, I love you all and hope you have an awesome weekend,

Kyle

I Can Feel The Eminem Within Me

When you read this blog’s title, you’re probably thinking either of two things:

1. I’m a soul stealer like Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat and I’ve consumed Eminem’s inner spirit, thus taking over his identity.

2. I’m some skanky whore hanging out after one of Em’s shows... and I got lucky.

Hope those visuals helped you out.

What I’m really talking about here is that I had to step into Eminem’s shoes and go a little “8 Mile” on my cover of “Airplanes” because dang it, he’s probably one of the best things about that tune.

Don’t get me wrong. BOB put out a great beat and cool concept for the thing, but by comparison, I just can’t see him holding his ground against Eminem. I’m assuming, of course, that BOB is the creator of the beat and chord progression of the tune.

If he isn’t, then... psh.

So when it came time for me to lay down some serious vocal tracks for my cover, Eminem’s verse is taking me the longest to record. And why shouldn’t it?

I’ve been singing for close to eight years now, so when I stepped up to the mic to hit those choruses, I think I got those done in one night.

Eminem’s verse still isn’t done.

I got to admit, I have very selective tastes when it comes to rap and most of it I believe is just plain silly. Like happy-time polka. I get the same emotional feeling from both. I dance around doing high knees and have my fingers pointing into the air.

But Eminem; this dude has talent. I’m very impressed by his use of rhythm to create verses that go off the beat and then back on again so smoothly. I don’t think that a most rappers have the capability to do that.

But after getting through most of Em’s verse, I’m almost done with the tracking!

Then it’s on to mixing and mastering and then...

everyone gets this thing free.

I’m very excited about that, because deep down, I believe that all music should be free. And just to note, the reason why some of my tunes are up for download right now is because I’m waiting on my official album release to do that.

Gotta leave you hanging for just a bit folks. Sorry :[

But I’ve already had a handful of folks who’ve heard a sneak peek of my “Airplanes” cover say that they’re thoroughly impressed and can’t wait for the finished product.

A message to those people: Please allow 6-8 weeks for payment.

On a different note, I want to add a new spin to HonestKyle.com and that’s to mention more of the local talent that now flourishes around the area. I realize that most of the topics on this site have either to do with well... me... *cough*, or with some of the artists and groups that I’ve come to idolize.

If you’re wondering what groups I idolize, check out my little “Favorite Albums” widget in the sidebar. We might have something in common!

Anyway, I want to give more appreciation and “air time” to other local bands and DIY musicians just like me who struggle with getting their names on the bill of local shows, who whore their asses off to sell tickets just to see a few more faces in the crowd, and basically put in as much effort as a full-time job to keep their goals moving.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with the acronym “DIY”. DIY stands for do-it-yourself. And when you’re a garage band, that’s what you got to do.

And guilt your close friends into hanging up fliers for you.

So, this is a shout out to the other local musicians out there that have a site or blog like this:

If you’re interested in having a link to your site on MY page for all to see, contact me through the “Contact” page and we’ll get that worked out.

Support your local scene people!

Just to remind everyone before I wrap this up, Let All Prevail’s one-time reunion show will be August 28 and you can purchase $3 tickets from any of the performing bands listed here:

Let All Prevail
Steal the Spotlight
Chasing October
Aldous
Gossip and Print

Take care and have a great Saturday,
Kyle

4th of July, "Airplanes" Cover, Let All Prevail, and Contest?

I hope that everyone had a very fun and safe 4th of July! I know that I sure did. I always enjoy it when my sister and her fiance, Nick, come into town from Baltimore, MD.
And if you’ve been to NF around the 4th of July, you’ll know that the biggest thing in town is the 4th of July carnival that we host down at our public city park. Honestly, there isn’t that much to do there besides walk around, but the major sites include a betting tent, a beer tent, and the wonderful, fattening, horrible-for-you carnival food!

The betting tent is super sweet. You can lay down a minimum of a quarter/max a dollar on some sort of number, then they spin a giant wheel and if the wheel lands on your number, you win whatever you put down. Pretty chill?

I slapped down an entire $1 bill and won that shit. I know what you’re thinking. “Kyle, how can you be so careless with such large denominations of bills?! I never heard of such badassness before!”

I just live on the wild side of life I guess.

Just a word to the wise: If you have the opportunity to share an Apple Dumpling with someone at the fair, do that. Those things are way too big. My fiance and I found that out for ourselves.

But all of that was a great get-away from the business of my job and music for a bit, but I really miss working on my HonestKyle music and I’m hoping that I can get back into the groove of things very quickly because I haven’t had much time to lay down any more tracks on my cover of “Airplanes”!

I’m at the point where I just have the vocals left. Now, this is probably going to be one of the most difficult vocal tracks to lay down only because I’ve never turned a rap into singing parts before. So... I pretty much know what kind of shenanigans I’m getting myself into.

However, it’s the weekend once again. That means anything goes. And damn it, I’m gonna get more of this done, because I want to offer this song for free for everyone to download immediately!

Plus, I’m using some new mixing techniques that have caused me to even rethink what I’ve already done. (“Way With Words”, “Falling Asleep”, and “Realizing the Betrayer”)

Needless to say, I’m really excited for everyone to hear the finished product when it’s done, and I’m glad that I’m able to give this song away for free. It’ll probably be required for people to sign up on my e-mail list is all.

Regarding Let All Prevail...

For those that don’t know, I used to be a part of this Power Pop/Happy Hardcore band called Let All Prevail about three years ago before I joined Wake the Lion. I played the keyboard and took the lead vocal responsibilities.

It was a fun time, but shortly after the release of our second full-length album, we disbanded.

The rhythm guitarist, Payson, and myself were the only ones to continue playing regularly with new musical endeavors, but our lead guitarist, John, had itched for another final show since things stopped so abruptly before.

So...

Three years later, John contacts us and says, “I’m gay! I’m coming out of the closet!” I of course responded with “John, I’m so glad you’re finally honest with us!”

He then continued and said “Guys, we should have a reunion show before I go to grad school.” We said “*Sigh*...fine.”

But really, we’re psyched for it.

Now, our original plan was to have a show at the Newton Falls Community Center at the end of July so that everyone who’s home for the summer would be able to attend, BUT, we couldn’t snag the date that we wanted and so the show has been pushed to the end of August.

August 28th to be exact.

This show will feature a couple local pop rock bands called Steal the Spotlight and Chasing October, along with our metal friends Aldous, and a couple short performances between sets by our good friends in Gossip and Print.

As of right now, the show will start at 7pm and pre-sale tickets (not available yet) are $3 while tickets at the door will be $5. We’ll have all of our merchandise up for sale with possibly a new custom shirt design.

PLUS...

A portion of every single ticket sold will be donated to help the oil cleanup effort in the gulf. We might also incorporate this into our merch sales as well.

I don’t want to get all political on your here, but BP... they suck. Moving on!

All of you best be watching your Facebooks to ensure that you don’t miss any of the juicy details about this show because with all of the marketing and promotion we’ll be implementing, we’re fairly certain that this will be one of the largest, IF NOT THE LARGEST, single stage shows in the area.

And please, if you’re not interested in the show, consider coming just to make a donation to the oil cleanup effort. Any little bit helps.

If you noticed, I mentioned something about a contest in the title of this post. What could this be about, you might ask? Well, it’s a chance for you to get involved, get your name in the credits of the album, and to get a witty idea in the album itself!

And I’m just going to leave you hanging there haha.

Sorry, but I don’t want to implement this contest just yet, BUT if you want to be considered for it, I advise you to sign up for the e-mail list to ensure that you can participate fully.

A lot of exciting things are going to be happening over the next month, so keeping watching Facebook, Myspace, and this blog for more updates! Have a great weekend everyone!

Your buddy,
Kyle

Mark Talks New Songs with Alternative Press

Filed Under:

via 182 Online by logan on 6/29/10

From AltPress.com:

At this point, it’s safe to say that Mark Hoppus is a human dynamo. Best known for his role in potty mouthed pop-punk trio Blink-182, the 38-year-old is more than just a mere bassist, having juggled production duties, podcasts, high-profile collaborations and more in recent years. His newest endeavor? A Different Spin With Mark Hoppus, a weekly, hour-long program hosted by its namesake airing on Fuse starting this September. We caught up with Hoppus to get the scoop on what his new venture is all about, as well as get an update on whether or not we’ll hear new Blink music before the world ends in 2012.

Are you in Los Angeles today?

No, we’re in New York City. I’m calling from inside Radio City Music Hall.

Really? What are you doing there?

We just had the huge press conference announcing the TV show on Fuse.

Press conferences aren’t something Blink-182 do very often; at least with the U.S. press. How do you act at a press conference? Do you have to tell yourself not to be who you are normally, or is it pretty much a straight thing?

When I try to be something I’m not, I suck at it. So I just try and relax and be myself—and I suck bad enough at that, so…

So what’s the dress code like for something like that?

I was told I could wear whatever I wanted, but my wife told me that instead of wearing shorts, I had to wear long pants because it was more appropriate.

Man, I’ll tell you what: The ball and chain, right?

[Laughs.] I know.

So you have this new Fuse show in the works. Is there officially a title?

As of right now it’s called A Different Spin With Mark Hoppus.

How much creative control will you have in what makes the show?

Total. No, actually it’s really cool because it’s been an absolute collaboration with everybody involved. The people involved all have the same mindset and are very creative and very talented and smart. That’s kinda how we want the show to go. From day one, it’s always been, “Let’s make this show together and make it rad and make it irreverent, smart and funny.” So that’s what we’re going for.

Obviously you’re very entrenched with modern music right now and there are a lot of bands you work with production-wise or take on tour or are, for lack of a better word, you’re “bros” with. How do you cover those bands on this show without seeming biased?

Probably because, well, I am biased. I’ve been having more fun with the bands I’m friends with because I get to ruin them more. I’ll probably have to be easier on people I don’t know than I will be on the bands I’m friends with and have toured with. Because with them, I can make fun of them and, you know, bring up things that make them uncomfortable and I’ll have to be a little more respectful of people I don’t know.

This show is definitely its own thing. It’s really based on music and on love of music and not only covering bands people know about, but also introducing people to new bands they might not have heard about. Like I said, we want it to be funny and for it to be a fun time, but it’s not a gimmicky, silly show. It’s more of a smart show about music and the music industry and people we like working with and listening to.

So will you be having guests on the show and playing music videos?

I don’t think we’ll be playing music videos, but we are going to have a lot of guests on the show, live performances, in-studio visits, backstage pieces, around-town segments, correspondents’ pieces and all kinds of stuff. We’re in production right now, so we’re still figuring out exactly what things are going to be. But the energy is such that if we wanted to try and have a band play on top of the Empire State Building, we would try to do that. If we wanted to go visit a band in the studio in France, we would try and go do that. If we wanted to take [Smashing Pumpkins frontman] Billy Corgan out for a drink and talk about music, we would do that. As long as we think something is fun and cool, we’re going to do it.

When you posted online that you had a big announcement coming and that everyone should tune into KROQ, it seemed like the announcement was going to be that Blink-182 are playing a huge KROQ show in September. Was that just kind of unfortunate timing having both of these news items come out at the same time?

Well, us playing that one show is actually a big deal for Blink-182 because it’s the only show we’re playing [this year] in North America. We’re going to be in the studio for the rest of the year recording the [new Blink-182] album. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I guess the radio station was playing commercials hyping up the announcement, meaning the announcement for the concert. But what they were saying in the announcement was when you tune in, listen for a new song. People thought that meant there was a new Blink-182 song, which of course there isn’t yet. So I think people were bummed because they thought they were tuning in for a new Blink song. We didn’t know [the radio station was] saying that on the air, but it created kind of general confusion for the Epicenter show. Then [the Fuse show] is a totally separate announcement and 10 times more important than anything else that could happen today.

You mentioned Blink don’t have any new songs, but when we talked last year, you guys had told me about “The Night The Moon Was Gone,” which later became “Up All Night.” How many more songs are there that are in various states of completion, and when can we expect to hear at least a snippet?

Hopefully soon. When Blink first started reforming, we got in the studio and started putting ideas down for many songs. “Up All Night” is definitely the one song that is furthest along. I would say it’s fairly near completion, but we haven’t had a chance to sit down and finish recording it. So when we get in the studio and start writing a bunch of new stuff, we’re going to figure out which is the best song to release first. It’s not like we’re holding anything back from anybody. We just want the first thing we put out there to be great, and it might end up being that song.

Last year, in the wake of the reunion tour, the excitement was really high for new Blink material. But people have kind of pulled back a little bit because you guys have been away for a number of months this year. Are you worried that people have cooled a little bit on new Blink material? How do you hype up your fanbase again?

I think we’re going to continue doing what we’re doing. For me personally, I wanted to get back in the studio many months ago, and Tom [DeLonge] wanted to record [Angels & Airwaves’ Love], and that took longer than he anticipated. He toured on it and now that he’s done, we’re jumping in with both feet and continuing with recording. We’re very fortunate in the fact that our fans are incredibly supportive, and hopefully, we’ll make it worth the wait for them because it’s been a long time. I get that. We’re taking the rest of the year to record an album.

Do you expect the album to be out in 2011?

Here’s the deal: We’re trying to finish it in 2010. We’re not going to put the album out until we feel it’s a great album. We’re not going to rush something that sucks, and we’re not going to take forever to put out something we don’t love. We’re going into the studio with the attitude that we’re going to work hard on this album and release something as soon as we can. If it takes three months, that’s fine. If it takes six months, it takes six months. We’re going to keep going until it’s ready. We’re working with a soft, soft goal where we’re working as hard as we can to make sure it’s great and that we can put it out as soon as possible.

Are you worried that by not giving yourself an end date, you might nitpick the songs into oblivion?

Yeah, and that’s what we did on [2003’s Blink-182]. We took as long as we wanted to, and nitpicked and looked over a bunch of stuff. Because we spent so much time experimenting on that album, I think we know what works and what doesn’t. So hopefully, this process will go quicker than the last. I loved the process of recording our last record.

When you say what works and what doesn’t, what are some things you think didn’t work on the last record?

Well, we just tried every idea that we had. Some things worked on some songs and then we’d use them in other songs. I wouldn’t say that there’s patently a “this doesn’t work” thing. I think we learned just trusting your gut from the beginning is the most important thing. On the last record, we would write a song and we would take it a certain direction, then second-guess it purposefully. Then we’d change everything around and then nine times out of 10, we’d come back to the original idea. So I think the lesson we took away from that was, experiment all the time and always trust your gut.

A lot of your back catalog is being issued on vinyl for the first time this year. Is that something that’s really important to you?

I love vinyl, and I think that one thing totally missing from music nowadays is the collectability of things. When I used to go record shopping, I would find a 7-inch import single from the Cure, and that was a big deal. It was a big deal to have the actual object and to see the artwork. Because of the internet and music being so accessible, in a matter of hours you can own every single song in an artist’s catalog. The collectability of the actual object of music is getting lost, but I think people are rediscovering the joy of that through vinyl. There’s definitely a joy of looking at a 12-inch album sleeve that you don’t get on an MP3. I think album artwork is kind of getting lost in how digital everything is now. A lot of thought goes into album artwork and which photos are used and getting an artist to do something amazing for an album. That should be as important of a component of the experience as the actual music.

So is it safe to say that no matter when the new record is done, it’ll come out on vinyl?

Yes, it’s safe to say that.
