My Blog Is Moving To Wordpress!

Filed Under:
My homesite (this blog), I think has been going strong for the past few months, don't you? I really try to take practical steps towards marketing my music and that's why I got the semi-professional-looking logo up top, the glassy social network buttons on the side, and even a few album reviews that you can check out from the link in the top navigation.

However, most of these things, I actually had to do by hand with some custom HTML elbow grease.

And I really don't enjoy doing things that way when I don't have to.

Recently, I've been setting up a few blogs, for other reasons, using the WordPress platform, and I have to say that things are a heck of a lot easier over there!

I'm actually a software developer/engineer as my real full-time job so doing things with code isn't all that stressful for me. But it's kind of like, if you cook hot dogs all day long, do you want to go home and grill up some more wieners for dinner?

I wouldn't. I'm not bashing hot dogs though. I actually happen to like hot dogs and I did work at a hot dog restaurant for close to eight months. There's a fun little nugget for ya.

But I really like the WordPress blogging platform and I would encourage anyone that's thinking about getting into blogging to try this out and see what you think.

This blog is currently hosted by Blogger and I don't know if you're aware, but Blogger is owned by Google, yet, I'm quite confused as to why they're not totally dominating the blogging world since that seems to be what Google is best at. Dominating everything.

Speaking of Google, did you hear that they actually invented a car that can drive itself? No joke. I haven't looked this up yet, but my dad said that he saw a video of this self-driven thing weaving in and out of traffic.

I wonder how they programmed that thing to deal with road rage? A metal hand slowly rises up past the bottom edge of the window with its middle finger extended...

Then maybe it weaves around to the back of the other guy and latches onto the bumper for ten miles or so and finishes by using its loud-speaker system to scream offensive racial slurs when they pull into their parking spot.

Frickin' awesome.

I just want to let you know at this point that by moving my blog over to WordPress, the domain name won't be changing. I'm taking www.honestkyle.com along with it so you'll still know where to find me.

But I'll more than likely do another theme change on this guy and give it some more pizazz.

Have a great day everyone, and let me know if you have any more information on that Google whip!

Realizing the Betrayer Lyrics

These are the lyrics to the third song that I wrote for my HonestKyle release entitled, Realizing the Betrayer

For those who don't know, I've been a lead vocalist in just about every music act that I've been apart of. Probably not because I'm the best because I happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Ironically though, I simply hate writing lyrics.

I'm being dead serious. It's so freaking hard! That's what she said. Occasionally, I'll get a topic and just completely nail it with some good imagery, and then other times...

...not so much.

But here's a song that I really tried to capture the essence of that defining moment when you realize that someone you care about stabbed you in the back. What you might have thought as visions of their past kindness flip through your mind.

I would really appreciate constructive criticism since it'll help me to hone myself into a powerful lyric-writing missile.

Without further ado... the lyrics to Realizing the Betrayer...

I weighed this up
And the blame is all on
The blame is all on you.
My god,
I can't believe you fooled everyone.

You made me love
Your mannerisms and witticisms
From your tongue.
Now you're the reason I'm left to rot.

You had loaded guns,
Raining bullets from hidden turrets.
I kissed the floor.

Your lies were blunt.
With false affection, you passed detection
And had room to run.
But you flew too close to the sun.

And now I'm taking off the gloves
Cause I think I know exactly what you need.
You think the trap you laid was tough.
You gained an ally, then you cut out both my feet.

And to think,
I once carried you home through the wind and the rain.
I gave you my strength when the rest turned away.

With baited hooks,
You lured me closer.
A master fisher with nets so strong.
You know I couldn't hold my breath that long.

So you stand and watch
Every motion and formed a notion to play along.
Don't give a damn about what you've done.

You know I couldn't hold my breath that long.

And now I'm taking off the gloves
Cause I think I know exactly what you need.
You think the trap you laid was tough.
You gained an ally, then you cut out both my feet.

I once carried you home through the wind and the rain.
I gave you my strength when the rest turned away.

Our Last Night Video - The Devil Inside You

Re-Mixed and Re-Mastered Music Re-LEASED

Who else out there is a perfectionist? If you are, you know how stressful we usually make our own lives.

I consider myself to be quite the perfectionist. Well, about some things. I really couldn't care less whether or not I do the absolute best job possible cleaning the lint filter on the dryer. The end result is pretty much the same.

However, I really do care a whole hell of a lot about my personal music that I present to you.

I mean, this is a solid representation of my personality, my thoughts, and my work ethic and if I don't nail this, I'm gonna call you back for a second date, and you're going to say to yourself "I don't date anyone that has a kick drum that out of balance in the final mix. Puhlease."

So what have I been doing all this time?

I seem to have a problem with writing in my blog or sending out e-mails consistently because of all the other things that are going on in my life.

For awhile there I was really big into finance. Has anyone ever read the book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad? If you haven't, I would highly recommend it.

It really gives you a new perspective on how to view making money. It doesn't cover everything, but gives a very good starting point.

So because of this book, I spent some time learning about the potential of my 401K, and made some neat changes in how I'm investing in it that hopefully will make me a millionaire when I retire.

(This is a hint for those of you that plan on sucking up to me later)

Plus, for all of you "music is my life" types of people, do you ever have a period, when you really don't want to listen to music at all? Because I think I went through some of that recently as well.

When I have a period of time that I just don't want to listen to anything, I usually stock up on tons of stand-up comedy albums. Oh boy, they're the best.

My favorites include Jim Gaffigan, Bill Maher, and Chris Rock. And I found that some stand-up comedians are just down-right painful to listen to!

Have you ever listened to Frank Caliendo's album, Make the Voices Stop? Ouch.

So yea, that's what I've been listening to recently. I did grab the newest release from Miss May I, Monument, only because I started listening to them before they got signed and I was very interested to hear their evolution.

Check out the video for their single Relentless Chaos:

That singer's voice on this tune is sick.

But let's talk about the subject line now.

I've still been working on my music and since I'm such an anal perfectionist I remixed and remastered all my previously released songs. (Not including the very rough ones from long ago)

And... all of my songs are up for FREE DOWNLOAD. Yea.

I know that for awhile, I had some of the songs allowable only for streaming and then the rest you could download, but none of that monkey business.

Please go to my Reverbnation page and download all of my newest songs again to get the power-housed remixed and remastered versions that are sure to have you creamin'.

However...

I would like to discuss my future plans as far as releasing any more music. What's going to happen from now on is only going to be beneficial for those that are on my e-mail list.

I will be releasing more music, but it will only be able to be heard by those that are on my e-mail list and it will only be up for a limited time

Yea.

You see, I want to give you guys the exclusive rights to listen to my newest un-publicly released material, but I would still like their to be some anticipation and excitement when I release all of my tunes collectively as an album later.

So I want to alert you right now, that I have a NEW song on my Reverbnation page that can only be heard by my e-mail list subscribers and it's only going to be up there for two weeks.

It's called Don't Bother and I encourage everyone to give it a listen while you still can! Plus, if you think that it sounds really good, you can encourage others to sign-up and listen as well so they can get in on the action.

But I wanted to let you all know that I'm still here and kicking. I'm just a perfectionist and have a difficult time moving forward and probably spend too much of my efforts perfecting the past.

We'll definitely be in touch (Hopefully in a more-consistent manner) and I hope that everyone has a fantastic week.

Feel free to leave me a comment or reply at any time :)

Let All Prevail Show Was A Success!

Wow, what a night. It's hard to believe that it was already a week ago that that crazy thing happened.

In case you don't know, or you haven't read any of my previous posts, Let All Prevail was a previous band that I used to be in. We called ourselves Post-hardcore. Sometimes we were metal. Heck sometimes we were screamo/pop/polka... who the heck knows.

Whatever it was, four years ago, we had lots of fun being guys right out of high school playing shows, winning band battles, and just making damn fools of ourselves on stage. Isn't that what being in a band is all about?

And last weekend was the power-house reunion show of that group, and boy it was bouncing son.

We had a turn-tablist by the name of Eric Thompson, a tight pop-rock band called Chasing October that did some sick harmonies, a killer metal band called Among The Fallen that tore up the stage, a hybrid female-fronted group called Steal the Spotlight, and Let All Prevail tugging on the reigns of this crazy carriage at the end of the night.

Above everything, it was just plain out fun and I don't remember the last time that I had that much fun.

Sure, it wasn't that much fun being the guy that had to sit at the front by the doors taking tickets, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Yea, taking out the trash at the end of the night isn't considered one of the perks... but you get over it.

Not to change gears here, but in case you haven't noticed, I haven't really been writing posts all that often anymore and there's been a reason for that.

I kind of just lost my momentum for awhile and wanted to focus on one of my other hobbies which is creating websites that act as mini online businesses. That probably sounds like a strange thing to say, but I've been at the online business game for about a year and half now and it's only getting better.

Just sometimes, I forget what's fun to do versus which will give me the biggest payout.

I think a lot of us get caught up in that game every now and again and this reunion show that just passed, helped me to get a little more perspective on things.

It helped me to realize that playing shows is awesome. To me anyway. If you've never played a show or something like that, try it. See if it's your cup of tea. I've been doing it for eight years and I'm addicted now.

So, I think that it's time I get aggressive with my music again, keep pumping out tunes, throw that live band together, and have a massive show.

You get me?

Stay slick guys,
HonestKyle

Our Last Night: We Will All Evolve Review

Filed Under: Labels:
4 out of 5

Our Last Night is one of those bands that I followed before they really took off and were signed to Epitaph records. It was an interesting time to see that emergence since they had just released a demo/first take of their song "Escape" and then the next day, their Myspace page was completely redone and they were in the luxury of record label society.

However, listening to their previous album, "The Ghosts Among Us", I wasn't really sucked into their sound like I was hoping. The two singles they had from that one, "Recovery" and "Escape" were both stuck in my head extensively, but the rest of the album didn't leave much of a dent for me.

As for their newest album, "We Will All Evolve", I think that Our Last Night really put some maturity into this one and as a result, it's become a new favorite of mine.

First Impression

Right out of the gate, I was impressed because, first of all, Trevor, the lead vocalist, isn't a kid any more. He actually jokes about this in a studio update video. I don't remember which one, but here's a link to the first one and then you can search from their if you truly wish.

But he really unleashes hell with his new matured scream. I just love it. Plus, I didn't expect the riffing and progressions to be so intricate and well-thought. Props to the musicians there.

I thought it was a great idea to put their first single, "Elephants" as their first track of the album because it really grinds and opens your eyes to a new way of putting together screams, clean vocals, and strong melodies that reminds you of the first time you may have heard "They're Only Chasing Safety" by Underoath.

Whistle Test

Oddly enough, it wasn't "Elephants" that was stuck in my head, but the chorus to "The Devil Inside You". Right now, you can hear that track on their Myspace. I found it very strong and I probably annoyed the bajesus out of a few of my coworkers at the office with all of my humming.

Later, I found that as I would listen to the album and have to end on any certain song, that would be the tune that was easily hummable throughout the day. They definitely passed the whistle test as far as catchy melodies goes.

Multiple Listens

It was a plain delight to hear this album over and over again. Sometimes I'll have to force myself to listen to CDs multiple times to get that feel and maybe push myself into a general acceptance of their music. I try to give everyone a chance.

In this instance, I found myself feeling quite guilty that I was listening to this album so much while neglecting my other new ones. Sorry Four Year Strong and Norma Jean.

Oh, and I should mention that I found the lyrics quite good. Who knew that Matt Wentworth could come up with some great concepts for for each song? Check out "Deceiver". It's cute. In a good way.

Current Fans

If you're a current fan, you'll probably think it's the best thing since sliced bread since Our Last Night not only carried over their previous style, but significantly improved upon it. They took similar ways of creating melodies with power chords and using 5ths and 4ths with the vocals and just put it down this production line to pump out catchy tune after catchy tune.

Bottom Line

For fans of the typical screaming and singing genre, take a listen to this. However, it's not one of those albums that aims to please the flat-brimmed hardcore dancers with transitions that lead into obvious, slow, and spacey break-downs.

"We Will All Evolve" is an album that was written to add to the list of "true musical composition". Not to give testosterone-driven mosh monkies something to do. However, they'll most likely get their fill off of this anyway. Congrats to Our Last Night for making a killer album.

For the past 5 years my brothers in Oh, Sleeper and myself have sacrificed our lives, our time, relationships, birthdays, holidays, health(haha) to travel around [...]"

Hearty Responses Deserve a Hearty Thanks :)

I want to make this post short and to the point here. And my point is that I'm very appreciative of you for joining my e-mail list and enjoying my rock cover of "Airplanes" by B.O.B., Hayley Williams, and Eminem.

(I have to keep putting who actually wrote it in each post so I can steer clear of copyright problems)

But it's really made me excited for the next batch of songs that I'm going to be creating!

And for anyone new to join my ranks, please follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and any of the other social networks that I frequent by clicking the large icons in the sidebar >>>>

I try to give updates on all the other bands that I like like Blink 182, As I lay Dying, Four Year Strong, Our Last Night, etc., so I can still keep you entertained :]

For those that don't know what my goals are, here's my checklist in order of what I hope WILL achieve with this music:

  1. Write 8 - 10 songs for a large E.P. or short full-length album.
  2. Record those songs. (This is the current process)
  3. Gain supporters along the way. (Doing this as well I suppose)
  4. Design and press real merchandise. (T-shirts, mugs, designer purses, etc.)
  5. Audition musicians for the LIVE HonestKyle band.
  6. Press the album. (Get it printed)
  7. Have an Album Release show.
  8. If all goes well... more shows?...
A few of my friends that are also musicians have been asking me about the "live band" portion and when that's going down. Keep your pants on guys and pay attention to the agenda list!

I should mention that since there's the possibility of this "band" progressing further than just the album release show, musicians who want to audition, when the time comes, shouldn't consider HonestKyle to be some sort of "on the side" deal.

I want to go all out. Make it huge. Crush it. Strangle it. Bury it. Harass its mother. Call it up late at night and hang up. Tell it that I've actually changed, get it to go out with me again, and then dump its ass all over again for the hell of it.

So don't wander in thinking that you won't need to put forth much effort. Unlike most bands you've played in, I AM A STICKLER!

(Somehow, putting the word "stickler" in all caps just doesn't give off that bad-ass vibe I was hoping for. Feel free to insert other words and phrases like "TOUGH NUGGET", "TORNADO WRAPPED IN A TSUNAMI", and "RENEGADE HAMSTER MACHINE".)

If you're a musician that's willing to practice 'til it's perfect, promote like a felon, sing ON KEY EVERY TIME YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO, and know how to separate business and fun, then I'm gonna want to talk to you.

Oh yes, I'll talk to you.

But I'm really excited about the merch and all that other good stuff. I think that I'll have some original ideas besides just the normal CDs and tshirts so heads up for that.

But please tell a friend about the new "Airplanes" cover cause I would really like everyone to have free copy :]

Until next time, I love you all and hope you have an awesome weekend,

Kyle

I Can Feel The Eminem Within Me

When you read this blog’s title, you’re probably thinking either of two things:

1. I’m a soul stealer like Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat and I’ve consumed Eminem’s inner spirit, thus taking over his identity.

2. I’m some skanky whore hanging out after one of Em’s shows... and I got lucky.

Hope those visuals helped you out.

What I’m really talking about here is that I had to step into Eminem’s shoes and go a little “8 Mile” on my cover of “Airplanes” because dang it, he’s probably one of the best things about that tune.

Don’t get me wrong. BOB put out a great beat and cool concept for the thing, but by comparison, I just can’t see him holding his ground against Eminem. I’m assuming, of course, that BOB is the creator of the beat and chord progression of the tune.

If he isn’t, then... psh.

So when it came time for me to lay down some serious vocal tracks for my cover, Eminem’s verse is taking me the longest to record. And why shouldn’t it?

I’ve been singing for close to eight years now, so when I stepped up to the mic to hit those choruses, I think I got those done in one night.

Eminem’s verse still isn’t done.

I got to admit, I have very selective tastes when it comes to rap and most of it I believe is just plain silly. Like happy-time polka. I get the same emotional feeling from both. I dance around doing high knees and have my fingers pointing into the air.

But Eminem; this dude has talent. I’m very impressed by his use of rhythm to create verses that go off the beat and then back on again so smoothly. I don’t think that a most rappers have the capability to do that.

But after getting through most of Em’s verse, I’m almost done with the tracking!

Then it’s on to mixing and mastering and then...

everyone gets this thing free.

I’m very excited about that, because deep down, I believe that all music should be free. And just to note, the reason why some of my tunes are up for download right now is because I’m waiting on my official album release to do that.

Gotta leave you hanging for just a bit folks. Sorry :[

But I’ve already had a handful of folks who’ve heard a sneak peek of my “Airplanes” cover say that they’re thoroughly impressed and can’t wait for the finished product.

A message to those people: Please allow 6-8 weeks for payment.

On a different note, I want to add a new spin to HonestKyle.com and that’s to mention more of the local talent that now flourishes around the area. I realize that most of the topics on this site have either to do with well... me... *cough*, or with some of the artists and groups that I’ve come to idolize.

If you’re wondering what groups I idolize, check out my little “Favorite Albums” widget in the sidebar. We might have something in common!

Anyway, I want to give more appreciation and “air time” to other local bands and DIY musicians just like me who struggle with getting their names on the bill of local shows, who whore their asses off to sell tickets just to see a few more faces in the crowd, and basically put in as much effort as a full-time job to keep their goals moving.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with the acronym “DIY”. DIY stands for do-it-yourself. And when you’re a garage band, that’s what you got to do.

And guilt your close friends into hanging up fliers for you.

So, this is a shout out to the other local musicians out there that have a site or blog like this:

If you’re interested in having a link to your site on MY page for all to see, contact me through the “Contact” page and we’ll get that worked out.

Support your local scene people!

Just to remind everyone before I wrap this up, Let All Prevail’s one-time reunion show will be August 28 and you can purchase $3 tickets from any of the performing bands listed here:

Let All Prevail
Steal the Spotlight
Chasing October
Aldous
Gossip and Print

Take care and have a great Saturday,
Kyle

4th of July, "Airplanes" Cover, Let All Prevail, and Contest?

I hope that everyone had a very fun and safe 4th of July! I know that I sure did. I always enjoy it when my sister and her fiance, Nick, come into town from Baltimore, MD.
And if you’ve been to NF around the 4th of July, you’ll know that the biggest thing in town is the 4th of July carnival that we host down at our public city park. Honestly, there isn’t that much to do there besides walk around, but the major sites include a betting tent, a beer tent, and the wonderful, fattening, horrible-for-you carnival food!

The betting tent is super sweet. You can lay down a minimum of a quarter/max a dollar on some sort of number, then they spin a giant wheel and if the wheel lands on your number, you win whatever you put down. Pretty chill?

I slapped down an entire $1 bill and won that shit. I know what you’re thinking. “Kyle, how can you be so careless with such large denominations of bills?! I never heard of such badassness before!”

I just live on the wild side of life I guess.

Just a word to the wise: If you have the opportunity to share an Apple Dumpling with someone at the fair, do that. Those things are way too big. My fiance and I found that out for ourselves.

But all of that was a great get-away from the business of my job and music for a bit, but I really miss working on my HonestKyle music and I’m hoping that I can get back into the groove of things very quickly because I haven’t had much time to lay down any more tracks on my cover of “Airplanes”!

I’m at the point where I just have the vocals left. Now, this is probably going to be one of the most difficult vocal tracks to lay down only because I’ve never turned a rap into singing parts before. So... I pretty much know what kind of shenanigans I’m getting myself into.

However, it’s the weekend once again. That means anything goes. And damn it, I’m gonna get more of this done, because I want to offer this song for free for everyone to download immediately!

Plus, I’m using some new mixing techniques that have caused me to even rethink what I’ve already done. (“Way With Words”, “Falling Asleep”, and “Realizing the Betrayer”)

Needless to say, I’m really excited for everyone to hear the finished product when it’s done, and I’m glad that I’m able to give this song away for free. It’ll probably be required for people to sign up on my e-mail list is all.

Regarding Let All Prevail...

For those that don’t know, I used to be a part of this Power Pop/Happy Hardcore band called Let All Prevail about three years ago before I joined Wake the Lion. I played the keyboard and took the lead vocal responsibilities.

It was a fun time, but shortly after the release of our second full-length album, we disbanded.

The rhythm guitarist, Payson, and myself were the only ones to continue playing regularly with new musical endeavors, but our lead guitarist, John, had itched for another final show since things stopped so abruptly before.

So...

Three years later, John contacts us and says, “I’m gay! I’m coming out of the closet!” I of course responded with “John, I’m so glad you’re finally honest with us!”

He then continued and said “Guys, we should have a reunion show before I go to grad school.” We said “*Sigh*...fine.”

But really, we’re psyched for it.

Now, our original plan was to have a show at the Newton Falls Community Center at the end of July so that everyone who’s home for the summer would be able to attend, BUT, we couldn’t snag the date that we wanted and so the show has been pushed to the end of August.

August 28th to be exact.

This show will feature a couple local pop rock bands called Steal the Spotlight and Chasing October, along with our metal friends Aldous, and a couple short performances between sets by our good friends in Gossip and Print.

As of right now, the show will start at 7pm and pre-sale tickets (not available yet) are $3 while tickets at the door will be $5. We’ll have all of our merchandise up for sale with possibly a new custom shirt design.

PLUS...

A portion of every single ticket sold will be donated to help the oil cleanup effort in the gulf. We might also incorporate this into our merch sales as well.

I don’t want to get all political on your here, but BP... they suck. Moving on!

All of you best be watching your Facebooks to ensure that you don’t miss any of the juicy details about this show because with all of the marketing and promotion we’ll be implementing, we’re fairly certain that this will be one of the largest, IF NOT THE LARGEST, single stage shows in the area.

And please, if you’re not interested in the show, consider coming just to make a donation to the oil cleanup effort. Any little bit helps.

If you noticed, I mentioned something about a contest in the title of this post. What could this be about, you might ask? Well, it’s a chance for you to get involved, get your name in the credits of the album, and to get a witty idea in the album itself!

And I’m just going to leave you hanging there haha.

Sorry, but I don’t want to implement this contest just yet, BUT if you want to be considered for it, I advise you to sign up for the e-mail list to ensure that you can participate fully.

A lot of exciting things are going to be happening over the next month, so keeping watching Facebook, Myspace, and this blog for more updates! Have a great weekend everyone!

Your buddy,
Kyle
